    Description

Small Percy Medina Hand Etched Gourd Sea Life Design Brown Black ~ 3" Diameter
Decorated gourds are among the oldest indigenous art forms of Peru, perhaps of the Americas, dating back some 5,000 years. In the remote village of Cochas, Peru, the art of decorating dried gourds, or “mates” has been kept alive through the work of several families, who have continued this ancient art in the tradition of their ancestors. The Medina family is one of these families.
Percy Medina (b. 1976) comes from THIS distinguished family of gourd artists He is recognized as one of the most talented gourd artists of his generation.
A Quechua Indian born in the Peruvian Andes, Percy Medina is a master of the ancient art of burnt gourds, or mates burilados. Medina creates his designs with tools he devised as a child, home-fashioned chisels and burning quinoa wood sticks—with which he painstakingly “etches” dried Peruvian gourds. Medina achieves up to 18 natural tones by varying the strength of his breaths on the stick embers. Each Percy Medina Gourd is entirely handcrafted, so no two will be precisely the same.
