    Description

Antique late 19th century, 1894, original African American folk art watercolor painting.  An intriguing scene of what appears to show the duality of both rural and urban African American fashion of the late 19th century, with one man dressed in flashy city clothes and one dressed in more simple, traditional farm attire.
Depicts a man, perhaps a son, presumably returning from the city (in his flashy new clothes) to visit an elderly man with a cane, presumably his father, on the plantation style farm.  Perhaps he is trying to tempt him to move to the city?  One can note flat land in the foreground as well as a small cottage, large loose round hay bales and fence in the distance.  My assumption is that this is southern scene as opposed to the northeast but worthy of further research.  Well done with nice detail and use of color.  The sky is particularly well done with impressive technical skill and a Realist capture of the rolling clouds.  Good capture of light and depth.  Meidum is watercolor on textured paper done in a primitive folk art style.  Signed and dated
    L.D. 1894
in the bottom left corner.  Very William Aiken Walker -esque although the style is different.  Quite worthy of further research.
In Good overall condition considering age and rarity.  Exhibits a very faint horizontal bend line across the top that is really only visible under heavy lighting and does not detract from the overall display quality.  Small pencil tipped size indent above the head of the gentleman on the left.  Shows foxing and toning which is appropriate to the age of the piece.  Verso shows remnants of old adhesive and mat.  No holes, rips or tears.  Crisp and bold.  Eye catching and appealing.  Displays handsomely.
Measures 9” x 6 1/2”.  Comes housed in a protective clear rigid sleeve to ensure safe handling and preservation.
An impressive piece of original 19th century African American folk art thet should be framed and preserved to share with future generations.
