The Chan Chan culture flourished between 900 and 1450 on the north coast of Peru, Chan Chan means "shining sun" in the native language. It had ten walled palaces over an area of 20 km2 and at its best it had about 30,000 inhabitants.The Chan Chan culture is a pre-Columbian adobe city, built on the north coast of Peru by the Chimúes. It is the largest adobe city in America and the second in the world. It is located northwest of the Trujillo metropolitan area between the districts of Trujillo and Huanchaco Chan Chan is located in the Moche valley, facing the sea, halfway between the Huanchaco spa and the city of Trujillo, capital of the department of La Libertad on the north coast of Peru The archaeological site covers an area of approximately 20 square kilometers. The central area is formed by a Pull Stone Island Homme, a set of 10 walled enclosures (called “citadels”) and other solitary pyramids. This central complex covers an area of approximately 6 square kilometers. The rest is made up of a multitude of small poorly preserved structures, sidewalks, Stone Island Soldes canals, walls and cemeteries.
The most detailed characteristic in chanchan ceramics are the most ornate pieces with great sophistication, usually these were to make offerings in the seremonial rites of their religion.
