  • Condition: Good vintage NOS New Old Stock condition circa 1980s. May have some signs of age and storage including chips in the glaze and slip, marks, scratches, shelf wear, dirt and dust. The lower level figure is not attached. You can glue it in if you wisht to make it permanent. It has the imperfections that you expect in hand made folk art including in the construction and the decoration. NOTE: I used a toothpick to prop the doors open for photos. The toothpick is not part of the retablo and does not come with it. See the photos.

Hand Made and Hand ColorfulPainted Local Folk Art from from a matchbox with plaster, cooked potato starch, wood and paint. This is an example of hand made Peruvian folk art that was usually unsigned and sold to tourists. Lots of color and textural interest. This is an NOS New Old Stock item from a shop in Santa Fe, NM, that closed around 1985 and has been in storage since then. See the photos.
    Retablos are a sophisticated Peruvian folk art in the form of portable boxes which depict religious, historical, or everyday events that are important to the Indigenous people of the highlands. It is a tradition originated in Ayacucho.
