Description
DescriptionFor your consideration is a decorative pair of Cambodian fine silver shakers. The bottom of each is marked ‘T.900’, indicating the silver content at 90%, also known as coin silver. These unique barrel shaped spacers are intricately designed with scrolls, flowers, and even a face. Each appears to be designed from two pieces and assembled for the final construct. The tops do not appear to be silver. Also, the silver appears to be an overlay, and not solid.
Based on information from Adrien von Ferscht in his book
Chinese Export Silver 1784 – 1940
,
The ’T.90’ is a mark based on the old Tola system of weight initiated by the British East India Company in its capacity as official managing and facilitating agent of the British government in India. 1 Tola = 11.4gm approx. The Tola formed the base for units of mass under the British Indian system and was also the standard measure of gold and silver bullion. Although the Tola has been officially replaced by metric units since 1956, it is still in current use and is a popular denomination for gold and silver bullion bars in Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Singapore as well as Zanzibar and Aden. It was also used in Cambodia [Khmer silver] from circa 1915.
T.90 inevitably was used by Chinese silversmiths working in Singapore or Cambodia." p.675
It is believed the T.900 is a newer mark. Please review the photographs to form your opinion as to the marks and the quality of the silver.

The lids side open and closed as intended. There is some corrosion to the pins used in the assembly process. There are a few small dings to the top edge of one of the shakers. Please review the photographs to form your opinion as to the condition.
