    Description

    Rare catalog of the New York/Chicago WPA and Black Artist Exhibition held at the Studio Museum in Harlem, New York from 13th November - 8th January 1978.  During the New Deal era the U.S. Government Works Progress Administration, Federal Art Project(WPA/FAP, 1935-1942) was the largest of the New Deal art programs and produced thousands of paintings, sculpture, and works on paper.  Initially, very few African-American artist were allowed to join the WPA’s programs.  In response, African-American artist in New York City formed the Harlem Artists Gild to protest the discriminatory practices and successfully pressured the WPA to hire an unprecedented number of African-American artist.  This 1978 exhibition catalog looks at 13 NY and Chicago African-American artist who contributed to the WPA, and all of whom were crucial to the Harlem and Chicago Renaissance movement started in the 1920s, as well as contributors to the 20th century American Modernist art movement.
