SHIPIBO CONIBO ART
The Shipibo-Conibo is an indigenous tribe that lives in the north eastern jungle of Peru, in the Amazonian rainforest, along the Ucayali River. The Shipibo-Conibo tribe was formed by two groups, the Shipibo (fishmen) and the Conibo, (ape men), and eventually became one distinct tribe through intermarriage and communal ritual.
The Shipibo-Conibo as a culture has a history that spans at least several centuries. They are known for the unique and complex geometric patterns with which they decorate their fabrics and ceramic pots. Their designs are inspired in traditions such as the Anisheati ceremony, and ayahuasca shamanism. Their patterns are inspired by shamanic songs(icaros) and have esoteric meanings that regulate their daily lives
The textiles are hand dye using pigments and colors extracted from plants and minerals and the designs painted using wooden sticks and plant based inks.
The pots are hand-modeled and produced by the women of the village using the coiling technique. They are then painted with the characteristic white or black geometric patterns. After being fired in a bonfire, the pots are then treated with resin that serves the double purpose of sealing them as well as accentuating the patterns.
