    Description

Finely Hand Crafted Portuguese 833 Silver Square Sailed Cog Fishing Boat Ship
Presented is a beautifully made, solid .833 silver fishing or merchant boat made in Portugal some time in the 1940's or 50's. This eight inch tall  solid silver "wooden" vessel is loaded with barrels or casks and dons a single mast and one square, lustrous, billowing sail. A long, nine-inch steering pole is mounted to the top of the stern. Is this a replica from 14th century or more ancient, or perhaps a more modern indigenous craft? Whatever it's inspired from, it is a very high quality work of a very talented silversmith artist. The details are fantastic. Boards, beams and pegs are all textured with "wood" grain. Silver ropes are twisted fibers. The full sail shows a lightly-faceted, hand-hammered texture. The barrels and pair of oars are removable as one piece, to reveal the construction below, as we show in our photos.
    Hallmarks:
On the front, starboard side of the boat, near the oar notch, you can see Portugal's silver hallmark for big articles, the eagle and number 833. This identifies the piece is from Porto, Portugal, dated from after 1938 and is made from silver with a fineness of 833. There is another very small maker or assayer's mark next to it that is difficult to identify.
    Condition:
The condition of the piece is excellent. It appears clean and without dents, damages or repairs. With scrutiny, we can see a light surface scratch on the right side near the stern.
Dimensions: 14 1/2 inches long by 6 1/2 inches wide and 8 inches high
    Weight:  1 lb 6.3 oz (631 grams)
