    Description

From the estate sale of a wealthy and well traveled art collector in Richmond, Va., this is a beautifully framed, meticulously hand embroidered tapestry chock full of supernatural, mystical imagery. It was created using an ancient technique -- linear mode embroidery with high-quality camelid threads upon a brown cotton base.
At first glance, the embroidery work would seem to be only the black, geometric images. But a closer look reveals that the entire red background is also comprised of individually applied stitches.
Major museums have fragments of Paracas embroidery in their collections, but it's very hard to find a modern example of this ancient art; I could find no other examples for sale online.
The linear mode of design tends toward abstraction and geometric shaping of images. Forms often contain within them other forms, as In this linear design, where for instance, the beast in the center encompasses six other animals. This embroidery art requires a great deal of planning and visualization to achieve the final product.
Flawless in its condition, it's mounted upon red UltraSuede, attached at its corners with Velcro.
The beautiful, hardwood custom frame is also in perfect condition.
    Embroidery measures 9.75 x 18 inches
    Frame: 13.75 x 22 inches
The frame is 2" deep and the embroidery is inset 1" down within the frame.
