Silver Tea Caddy Spoon
At one time my late mother collected unusual spoons. She kept a "log" of most of them, starting in 1940, but this is one of the ones that she never identified. Through the years many articles had been published about this collection and several "medals" were awarded also. One of the newspaper articles mentions me, at age 3 liking to help with the polishing. That was 65 years ago...
I am assuming that this spoon is Dutch style made by Georg Roth & Co. in Germany. It has no markings on it so I'm not sure. Could it be Dutch made by a Dutch silversmith? Tested as silver at my local jeweler's, they could tell me that it is above 800 silver, the only marks on it are two initials that are hand engraved on the back of the spoon. These are the uppercase letters L and G. The spoon hasn't seen daylight in about 60 years...needs some tarnish removal and some
removal of old silver polish. I've soaked a spoon in water for several hours and then used a soft toothbrush to clean out the old polish...worked well. Who knows, this might be some that I left behind 65 years ago!!! Any pink or red color is a reflection of my camera (it's red)...
This caddy spoon measures approximately 5.25" in length and about 1.75" at the widest. It is in great, "'as made", condition...late Victorian Era....with images of two women going to market (my guess only), a cow or bull in a stable and two fish...possibly dolphins... It is a great caddy spoon, sure to be noticed and admired...a perfect gift or addition to a collection...
