    Description

This Boy Scouts of America Handbook belonged to my father, who was born in 1923. I found it in a duffle bag with his other boyhood belongings and his Navy uniform.
This book has obviously been well used. My father must have been at the age he was just learning to write his name in cursive because he put it on the inside cover and first page and also the inside back cover and the last page of the book, which is an advertisement for Mercurochrome.
The first several pages of the book have water damage, I’m picturing a rain soaked pup tent.
But this book is a fascinating compilation of all things a young boy scout would need to know, complete with lifesaving techniques, making a campfire without matches, and “Indian Sign Language Code”, along with thoughts on qualities like courage and “courteous manners.” Both qualities that my father possessed.
You can see from the photos that this book has been well loved. And dang it, as I was looking through it, the already loose cover came completely unglued from the book.
Good on the Boy Scouts for gifting young men with such a helpful book. I hope you enjoy it.
