Description
Presented is a fabulous Dutch silver windmill shaped box. This piece dates to 1875 and was made by Herbert Hooijkaas. The box is done very realistically in the form of a windmill, with excellent attention to detail and texture. The windmill blades really spin, and there is a wheel at the back of the catwalk that spins, as well as a flag that moves on the lid. There's even a little figure of a man at the base, holding his hat in one hand. The top portion of the windmill comes off to reveal a storage space inside, perhaps originally for snuff or spice, but of course you can use it for whatever you like today. This piece is in great condition. There are no splits, no breaks, no dents, no monograms, no monogram removals, and no repairs.
This piece is stamped with the Dutch lion passant hallmark guaranteeing at least 833 purity, the assay mark of Minerva's head with the letter m in the helmet for the city of Schoonhoven, and the date letter q for 1875 on the upper surface of the catwalk area. The underside is stamped again with the Dutch lion for 833 purity silver, with the maker's mark for Herbert Hooijkaas. The lion stamp also appears on the lip of the lid. One blade of the windmill is also stamped with the Dutch small article silver guarantee.
This piece stands about 5 7/8 inches tall.
This piece weighs 126 grams or 4.4 regular ounces.
