Description
1982 Ferrari 512BBi / Berlinetta BoxerThis is an AMAZING example of the car that was Enzo Ferrari’s response to the Lamborghini Miura and his first mid-engine Ferrari. You’re likely aware that only 1008 examples were made, and that the majority were made with a red exterior. Quite sinister in black, and even more elegant with a black interior, this low mileage example
(27850 mi) is highly desirable and rare.
It is a no accident car (Carfax/Autocheck) with only 3 owners of record (excluding any dealers) including myself. The previous owner had the vehicle almost 30 years in California. It is in remarkably original condition and could serve well as a driver or a full restoration later.
Federalized in the ’80’s (due to Enzo refusing to create a U.S.-specification Boxer), this Boxer has correct-for-U.S. speedometer in MPH as well as non-European spec marker lights. The conversion was very tastefully performed by Euritalia without the often seen “bumperlettes” that disfigured the front and rear of so many imported Boxers (VIN is ZFFJA09B000039527). The converted smog pump and exhaust system required by regulations have since been removed (now legal due to ‘antique status’ of vehicle). The exhaust manifolds were recently removed, ceramic coated, re-wrapped, and re-installed with new gaskets and hardware. The previously heavy and restrictive exhaust cans were replaced with a 00 Forza SS Mille Miglia system that is significantly lighter with a much better sound.
Recently refinished wheels with replaced metric TRX tires have been removed and placed into storage bags for potential future Concours use. Replacement Group4 wheels (in classic Ferrari Star pattern) have been powder coated in vintage Gold/bronze and shod with modern tires (Firestone Firehawks which have the correct period appearance) that perform MUCH better and can be replaced more inexpensively than the “once a decade” manufactured TRX’s.
Following wheel replacement, the car underwent an alignment and appropriate shimming. The rear CV boots were replaced with re-packed bearings at that time (common Boxer issue is exhaust heat causing premature degradation of CV boots). These components should now age much better after the ceramic coating of the headers and improved fiberglass wrap.
Original purchase documentation is missing, but extensive receipts and documents since 2015 are present in 3 ring binder. Over k in documented receipts over the past 5 years to bring this Boxer to amazing running condition. Original Owner’s manual/pouch is present. Additional documentation may be available through Ferrari should Classiche certification be sought.
Despite having been minimally used in later years under the previous owner, my time of ownership has allowed this great Boxer to be thoroughly sorted. The majority of the mechanical aspects of the car have been refurbished, reconditioned, or replaced where appropriate to bring vehicle up to optimum condition. With the recent extensive (and expensive) engine out service in November, this Boxer should run very well with only minimal service requirements for years to come.
Some of the common Boxer issues addressed are the following:
-Replacement of interior fuse box (the originals routinely fail over time)
-Rebuild and greasing of window motor components with installation of special “accelerators” that help maintain window opening/closing speed (hidden in door frame).
-Rebuilt Original starter
-Fuel system purge/cleaning with new fuel lines (Only Stabilized Ethanol-free fuel run since my ownership)
-Clutch/Flywheel assessment with adjustment (minimal wear, no replacement recommended)
-Air Conditioning was changed to R134 with appropriate fittings/decals. It runs very well and holds charge without difficulty.
Paint
-This Boxer has undergone an extensive emblems-off 2 step correction with compounding, polishing, and detail (8/19). This was followed by a 2 step ceramic coating. Conversations with the detailing specialist supported that the paint IS original Ferrari Nero (1240) with some areas of touch-up present. There are a couple of small areas of paint wear that are evident including the driver side front fender peak, both edges fore-aft of the rear clamshell (common Boxer issue), and an area on the top of the rear bumper. The paint is actually VERY good for its age and polished nicely.
Suspension
-Wheel alignment (12/19)
-All 4 corners had the shocks rebuilt/overhauled (8/17) with refinishing of control arms and swivel bars with new bushings.
-The car with its updated wheels/tires/alignment drives very smoothly with no pulling or jarring.
Brakes
-Bled and fluid replaced 6/19
-Calipers rebuilt 8/17 with new pads, brake hoses, and rotors refinished
Engine
-A full and extensive engine-out service was performed 11/20. The service included new water pump, timing belt and all other belts and tensioners, resealing of complete motor assembly less head gaskets, ultrasonic cleaning of injectors with new seals, replacement of all worn/aged hardware with OEM Ferrari parts, new hoses, and replacement of all fluids.
-New OEM Motor mounts installed at Engine out (11/20)
-Starter was rebuilt 4/20.
-Air filters replaced, spark plugs replaced and gapped 6/19
-Passenger Fuel Pump replaced 6/19; distributor cap/ seals replaced with coil cleaned
-Optima battery 5/19
-Injectors and both fuel pumps replaced 12/15
-Brand new Thermostat and housing placed 12/20
-Compression check prior to 11/20 service showed all cylinders to be strong and within 10% of each other
Transmission
-During recent engine-out service (11/20), the transmission drop box was entirely rebuilt with replacement of ALL bearings. Clutch was inspected and found to have minimal wear. Throw-out bearing replaced and adjustments made.
-Carrier Bearings replaced with differential disassembled with bearings replaced (12/15)
Wheels/Tires
-Group 4 Wheels (Model 1575 in classic Ferrari Star pattern) have been powder coated in vintage Gold/bronze and shod with modern 17” tires (Firestone Firehawks).
-Original Cromodora Wheels were refinished 8/17 with re-chromed knock-off nuts.
-New Michelin TRX tires installed 3/15, removed from car 7/19 (less than 400 miles); in storage bag with original wheels
Accessories
-The often missing OEM Pioneer Radio and 5 channel equalizer are present and functioning
-The OEM Tool roll kit is present with all of the correct pieces and interior matching black leather case
-OEM Jack kit is present with correct pieces
-Correct Rear License plate mount is installed
-Custom fitted OEM Ferrari Boxer interior car cover
-New custom period-correct front floor mats (originals in storage)
-OEM timing cover replaced
Thank you for your time in looking at this beautiful Boxer. Only reason for sale is the need to downsize number of vehicles as I move to a home with less garage space! If you are a serious buyer, please feel free to reach out with any additional questions. I would certainly welcome you inspecting it in person to ensure it is the right Ferrari for you. I certainly feel that the Boxer is very undervalued at this time, and it will be a very good investment.
